During the 80's & 90's Toyota was on fire when it came to building sports cars. Pretty much the only problem with this car was rust. This car showed the world you didn't have to be a city banker to afford a mid-engine rear drive 2 seater. When Toyota gave it its signature T-bar roof it got even better. UK models sadly never got a supercharger but many imports made their way to Blighty.
Following the success of the Mk1 Toyota gave us this slick new looking Mk2 that wouldn't look out of plan in modern showrooms (interior aside). However the car first suffered with a lack of power. The GT euro model gave a well needed boost in power to 158BHP and facelift to 174BHP but it was the import that would set your pants on fire with a turbo fitted it now had 225BHP.
The Celica had one major problem just like the VW Corrado on launch its price. But put that to one side and what you have is a all wheel drive rally derived, turbo charged coupe. UK models had 239BHP still enough to hammer most modern cars. Due to poor sales this has helped to make this a fast appreciating classic more than capable of handling modern roads.
Finding movie fame in The Fast and the Furious, this was Toyota's answer to things like the Porsche 944 Turbo. The Mk4 Supra was the daddy in my opinion. Boasting a 3 litre twin turbo and 326BHP it was a 90's rocket ship. The engine is highly tuneable but try and stay away from them and get an unmodified one. Japan shows that if you build it right in the first place it will stand the tests of time. And with the chances of seeing a Mk5 in the future values will keep rising.
