850R
480 Turbo
A Volvo? Yes thats right 2 of them. During the 60's Volvo made some beautiful cars like the P1800 but you never thought of them as a performance brand. Well that changed in the 90's. Volvo put a 2.5 litre 5 cylinder turbo engine into its 850 and the 'R' was born. This was a touring car for the road and it really was a BTCC touring car. As most people know this was such a fast car the police used it for motorway duties. Practical and very fast what more could a family ask for?
This cars design was very much out there when it was launched in the late 80's. Most makes were still using a very box like design. Volvo of all people went for a more concept car design. Using a 1.7 litre turbo charged engine it wasn't the most powerful car but still pushed it to 60 in just over 8 seconds. So by modern standards you would say its a warm hatchback back in the day it would of been considered hot. This really is a rare hatchback.
